EWING
-- Attorney General Peter C. Harvey and
Juvenile Justice Commission (JJC) Executive
Director Howard L. Beyer today awarded
promotional badges and certificates to
19 correction officers, one parole officer
and seven investigators -- including the
JJC's first female Captain -- during a
ceremony held at The College of New Jersey.
"Promotions
represent personal, as well as professional
growth," said Attorney General Harvey.
"The men and women we are recognizing
today have chosen a profession that seeks
to make a difference in the lives of our
state's youth. I commend them for their
service, dedication and pursuit of excellence."
The JJC is the single state agency responsible
for providing juvenile correctional rehabilitation
and parole services. The JJC cares for
New Jersey's high risk and increasingly
vulnerable youth. The agency operates
six secure care facilities, as well as
22 residential community homes and day
treatment facilities. In addition, the
JJC is responsible for parole and transitional
services for youth when they return home.
The JJC employs more than 500 custody
and parole staff.
"The
promotions awarded today are in recognition
of years of service and experience,"
said Executive Director Beyer. "The
Juvenile Justice Commission is proud of
its highly trained law enforcement staff.
And we are committed to realizing the
potential of the youth in our care. Dedicated
and experienced correction officers, juvenile
parole officers and investigators play
a vital role in our primary mission of
turning young lives around."
The JJC is responsible for the care and
custody of more than 2,000 young offenders,
including approximately 1,000 committed
youth, 300 probationers, and 800 juvenile
parolees. JJC residents range in age from
12 to 23. The average resident is age
17 at the time of admission, and more
than 90 percent are male.
